Saint George's Altar Servers, like the Choir, are there to assist in, and give dignity to the worship of Almighty God. A team of about a dozen, aged eight and upwards, supports the clergy in their leading of the worship during the 10am Parish Mass on Sunday, and Sung Masses on Feast Days. They serve two or three times a month with older members covering the monthly Solemn Evensong and assisting at the 8am service on Sundays.
At the services, the duties of Servers are Crucifer, Acolytes (Candle Bearers), and MC (Master of Ceremonies). On feast days a fifth Server will act as Thurifer (Incense Bearer). All are involved in the procession into and out of Church. The Acolytes (and Thurifer when present) lead the procession when the Gospel Book is carried into the Pulpit so that a reading from Matthew, Mark, Luke or John may be proclaimed to the assembled congregation.
Other duties involve the preparation of the Altar at the Offertory including accepting the bread, wine and offerings from the congregation's representatives (Stewards), and the cleansing of the sacred vessels after Communion.
The Servers are a happy and committed group who take their responsibilities as Servants of the Sanctuary seriously. New members are always welcome and training is given in order to understand fully the symbolism and rituals used in our worship.
