Here in Saint George’s we decided to use the title of Steward to replace the designation of Sidesman as it was felt that it better describes the work they undertake.
The office of Sidesman is an ancient one; their duties are described in Canon E2 as being "to promote the cause of true religion in the Parish and to assist the churchwardens in the discharge of their duties in maintaining order and decency in the church and churchyard, and especially during the time of divine service".
The only qualification of a Steward is that they should be on the parish electoral roll. They can be chosen by election at the annual parish church meeting or more usually the churchwardens have the delegated powers to appoint whoever they see fit to carry out the duties.
Today the most important responsibility of the Steward is to act as a ‘greeter’ and make all visitors, both regular worshippers and those entering the church for the first time, feel welcome and at ease. They give out service books and offer any help needed in finding a seat. During the service they may take the collection and carry up the elements at communion. Afterwards they collect books from those leaving, again speaking to newcomers, making them feel welcome to return. Finally, they help to tidy the church.
At Saint George’s two ladies and one man are on Steward duty each week, the man also acting as bell-ringer before and during the service. The appointment of Stewards is seen as a way to involve members of the congregation in the running of the church. They perform a vital role in setting the right tone and spiritual ambience before a service.
