In the east wall of the Lady Chapel there is a pair of windows installed in 1960 as a memorial to Miss Jesse Younghusband, 1892-1960, who served for many years as sacristan. Miss Younghusband was a notable local personality serving on the City and County Councils. Her work in the field of education was recognised by the naming of Chichester's Jesse Younghusband Junior School.
The windows, which depict Jesus in the house of Martha and Mary, are the work of Carl Edwards, the stained glass artist who was best known for the windows in the Temple church in London when it was rebuilt after destruction in the war.
The former window had been blocked for some time on account of the brightness of the morning light in that position. Accordingly Mr Edwards used a strongly coloured glass, of jewel like quality, which counteracted the intense light. The cost of the window was £200 and met by a public subscription it was dedicated by the Archdeacon of Chichester on 29th July 1961.
There are three pairs of windows in the south wall of the Lady Chapel, considering them from left to right internally, two windows picturing St.Anne and St.Mary BV are a memorial to a parishioner, Mary Adeleine Hawes who died 14 January 1913.
Next a pair of windows in memory of Elizabeth Mary Glover who died on 22 Oct 1934, the wife of Dr Glover, rector from 1909 to 1934. These windows show St Zacharius and St Elizabeth
The third pair is also the work of Carl Edwards and represents St Francis and the birds; they were installed in memory of Daphne Johnson, 1890-1968, and paid for by her relatives and friends. The window was dedicated by the Bishop on his visit the St George’s for our dedication festival on 26th September 1971.
