Stained Glass Windows - Part 3: The South Aisle

By Ken Green

Continued from previous page.

In the south side aisle is a three panel depicting St.Richard, St.Nicholas and St.Christopher. This window was originally in All Saints' Church at Portfield and was transferred to St George's on the closure of that church in1981, fortunately, although some of the lower margins had to be removed, the panels fitted into their new setting.

The window is from the workshop of the distinguished stained glass artist Charles Eamer Kempe [1838-1907] The small tower symbol in the bottom left corner of the window indicates that it is the work of Kempe’s assistant and eventual successor Walter Tower. From the Workshop’s daybooks we know that this window was installed in the late 1920’s
