Caring for our Churchyard

St Mary’s churchyard before and after our latest ‘Make Hay Day’
St Mary’s churchyard before and after our latest ‘Make Hay Day’

Off Whyke Road, just south of Quarry Lane, is the former parish church of St Mary’s.  Although the church building closed many years ago, the churchyard remains open as a place for Christian burial.  It is a suprisingly large site, which quickly gets overgrown. We want to do our best to keep it looking beautiful and to honour all those buried there.  So every few months over the spring and summer, we hold a ‘Make Hay Day’ to strim back all the grass and weeds.  We are very grateful to the Whyke Residents’ Association for their help with this.  Keeping the churchyard looking smart depends entirely on the work of volunteers – so if you can spare the odd hour, do please get in touch!
